Artist Spotlight: Maya Chen Is Done Performing to Nobody

Maya Chen has been releasing music for six years. She has listeners in Tokyo, Berlin, and São Paulo who have streamed her records hundreds of times. She has never played a show for any of them.
“I’ve done the livestream thing,” she says. “I’ve gone live on Instagram. I’ve done Twitch streams at 11pm on a Tuesday to keep my momentum up. And it works, technically. The numbers are there. But at some point I had to be honest with myself: I wasn’t performing. I was broadcasting.”
Chen is an indie ambient-folk artist based in Portland, Oregon. Her sound — layered guitar, looped vocals, unhurried lyrics about impermanence — has built a cult following the old-fashioned way: steadily, through word of mouth, across borders. She has over 40,000 monthly listeners and a fanbase that is, by her own description, “more global than local.” Touring to reach them has never been financially realistic. Streaming never felt real enough.
When she joined Stagefront as one of the platform’s pilot artists earlier this year, she wasn’t sure what to expect.
”It Felt Like a Venue Again”
The first thing Chen noticed about a Stagefront show was the crowd. Not the chat — the crowd.
“In a regular stream, your audience is a scroll. You see names moving. It’s hard to hold onto the feeling that those are real people in a real moment with you.” In a Stagefront space, built on the browser-native Portals engine, fans enter a shared three-dimensional environment. They’re present in the space. They can move through the venue. They’re together.
“The moment I finished my first song and saw the room react — not a chat, a room — I understood what had been missing. It wasn’t the technology. It was the shared space.”
That shift, Chen says, changed how she performed.
“I started pacing my sets differently. I started leaving space, the way you do in a real room when you want the quiet to land. Because the quiet actually lands now. The room holds it.”
What She’s Building Toward
Chen’s first official Stagefront show is scheduled for September. She’s treating it like a venue residency — a monthly show, same time, growing audience, her own space that exists between performances.
“I want my fans to have a place to come back to. Not just a notification that I’m live. A venue. Something with a door and a history.”
She’s also preparing material she’s never played live anywhere else — songs written specifically for the spatial format, designed to use the room.
“I’m building a show, not a stream. That distinction matters to me.”
